The Japanese characters 怪獣 can be translated as "strange beast." The term spread in the West in the 1950s thanks to kaijū eiga, the iconic "giant monster films." The progenitor of the kaijū is Gojira (Godzilla in the West), the protagonist of the 1954 Toho film of the same name.
