The Japanese characters 怪獣 can be translated as “strange beast.” The term became widespread in the West in the 1950s thanks to kaijū eiga, the iconic “giant monster films.” The progenitor of kaijū is Gojira (Godzilla in the West), the protagonist of Toho’s 1954 film of the same name.
