In a short story by Leo Tolstoy, a little duckling tries to fish in a pond. Mistaking the reflection of the moon on the water for a fish, he lunges toward it in an attempt to catch it, obviously failing. The other ducklings near him mock him, and in that moment our little one feels a pain he had never imagined; rather than risk being ridiculed again, he chooses hunger. From that day on, he begins to see his peers as demons, but being just like them leads him to a moral doubt: “could I be a demon myself?”
