Time can be observed through two perspectives, which correspond to two different stages of concentration: the first is the "irreplaceable moment," a unique occasion described by the yojijukugo ichigo ichie (一期一会), and is represented by the camera. Here, concentration is directed toward the joy of the present.
The second is the analysis of change, described by the yojijukugo ryuto dabi (龍頭蛇尾), which means "dragon's head, snake's tail" and invites us to pay attention to how a circumstance evolves beyond its initial premises. Here, concentration is directed toward the movement from the past to the present. Empowered by these two perspectives, the samurai can turn toward the future, which is now the new present, and seize the moment.
